For 45 years, until his death in 2004, Giovanni Conterno forged a reputation as perhaps the greatest of all Barolo producers, irrespective of style. The wines he made were the quintessence of “traditional” Barolo: rich, powerful, massively structured, and capable of long development in bottle.

For many, his heroic Monfortino—the product of wild temperature swings during fermentation and 6 to 8 years in barrel—is the most perfect expression of the Nebbiolo grape.

Tasting Notes

When to drink
Drink now or cellar for a further 10+ years
On the nose
Aromas of dried rose petals and oranges. Menthol, earth, underbrush and tobacco flavors lead off in this monolithic red, with submerged sweet fruit.
On the palate
It's full-bodied yet compacted and tight. Tannins are perfectly managed. It makes you want to drink it now with its balance and finesse.
Product Notes
The cult wine that is Conterno’s Monfortino is made from fruit sourced from a selection of the best parcels in the family’s Francia vineyard. Only around 600 cases are produced each vintage and Monfortino is only produced in the finest years. Inarguably the most perfect expression of Nebbiolo, Monfortino ages for around 6-8 years in neutral oak barrels and is a richly powerful and structured wine with an almost ethereal complexity and balance.
