Felton Road 'Calvert' Pinot Noir 2018

$115.00
Profile Red Fruit
Region Central Otago
Body Medium-Full

Felton Road wines is located in Bannockburn, Central Otago in New Zealand, the most southerly wine growing region in the World. Here, vineyards are nestled into small macroclimates totally surrounded by high mountains. Though the location is on the edge of sustainable viticulture these macroclimates consistently combine hot days, cool nights and long dry autumns: perfect for the creation of fine Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling. The latitude of 45 degrees south is similar to the Willamette Valley in Oregon and some of the finest wine regions of France. Central Otago is New Zealand's only wine region with a continental climate rather than a maritime one.

On the nose
A floral and delightfully perfumed nose immediately engages and enthrals. Sweet fruit opens the palate exposing layers of dark cherry, spice and complex earthy notes.
On the palate
Am immediate and open appeal is quickly tempered by its structural and mineral tannins: a mouthfeel characteristic of Calvert’s soils. They contribute a stature and seriousness to the wine.
Product Notes
The soils at Calvert are deep heavy silts with a thin layer of loose topsoil. The unique gravity flow winery enabled the grapes to be gently destemmed directly into open-top fermenters without harsh pumping with approximately 20% as whole clusters. The wine spent 17 months in barrel (30% new French).
