Profile Savoury
Region Margaret River
Body Medium-full

Established in 1970, as one of Margaret River’s ‘founding five’ wineries, Cape Mentelle pioneered many of the region’s renowned wine styles and today is a benchmark for the quality of the region’s wines. The winery takes its name from the nearby Cape, named by the French ‘Baudin Expedition’ which charted the coast of Western Australia in 1801. They named the Cape after two notable French scientists, geographer Edmund and his cartographer brother Francois-Simon Mentelle, who lived in Paris in the early 1700’s.

Tasting Notes

When to drink
Enjoy now or cellar for 1-2 years
On the nose
The aromatics are floral and spicy; wild black cherry, violets and lavender with orange marmalade and intense smoked peppercorns. Finer nuances of cardamom and cocoa nib entwine with leather and oriental spices with undertones of briar and savoury licorice notes.
On the palate
The palate is rich and juicy, displaying satsuma plum and ripe black forest berry fruits of mulberry and blackberry overlaying cured charcuterie and smoked pink peppercorn. Oak notes of cinnamon and nutmeg, licorice and clove interlace with red mineral earthy notes, hints of orange peel and cedar bark. The tannins are chewy yet silky with great texture and detail.
Product Notes
Cape Mentelle Shiraz takes inspiration from the most traditional techniques to highlight our ideal temperate, maritime climate for this classic Australian variety. The fruit is partially destemmed, berry sorted, cold-soaked and traditionally fermented. Maturation in small barriques aims to retain the delicate fruit and floral characters of the variety and the more savoury, spicy elements derived from our vineyards in Margaret River.
